Why I Love My Period

i-love-my-periodBeauty is in the eye of the beholder. I mean, sure – periods can be a pain in the uterus. They can be inconvenient. They might happen at the wrong time, in the wrong place, with the wrong supplies, but over the years I have found a happy place where I embrace my menstrual cycle. So, here are the reasons I love my period. Maybe it’ll help you to find some reasons to love it too!

Taking Care of Business

I feel kind of lucky to have a week during the month where it seems like my body just flushes all the crap out. The hormones in our systems cause us to shed more than just the lining of our uterus. They make our bowel movements more frequent too. Beyond the physical, however, it also seems to serve as a kind of emotional catharsis for me. Rarely during the rest of the month do I take the time to care for myself like I do, both emotionally and physically, as I do when I’m on my period. I’ve spun it as a positive and made it about giving myself permission to take care of me and focus on my needs and wants. And most of the time that’s chocolate.

Rest Stop

Have you noticed that we live in a very go-go-go kind of culture? It seems like most of us are constantly on the go, taking care of other responsibilities like work and family. That’s not really natural, though. We need more rest than we allow ourselves to have, and when I’m on my period I find that I give myself permission to have that. I use my period as a natural reminder that I need to slow down and take care of myself. I find I’m more mindful during my period and listen more to my body and what it needs. Again, it’s mostly chocolate. Probably some wine, too.

Thoughtfulness

I’ve decided that I don’t suffer from PMS anymore. Sure, I’m cranky and maybe my emotions are bit heightened, but I’ve decided to think of this as being more in touch with my intuition. I allow myself to feel emotions that I may not at any other time of the month. I’ve stopped passing things off as PMS and trying to understand why, when I’m a bit more sensitive, certain things get to me more. I try to listen to it and see what it’s trying to tell me.

Chocolate

I can’t say enough how much I love chocolate, but there are real benefits to consuming chocolate when you’re on your period. Your body is working hard, and your uterus is a muscle, so it needs magnesium to help it along. You know what has magnesium? Dark chocolate. Mmmm…chocolate.

For Your Consideration

Most people make New Year’s resolutions, but we would be far better served and see a lot more progress if we did it more than once a year! I take the time I have my period as a time to reflect on a monthly basis on where I’m going, where I’ve been and what I want. It’s kind of like a built-in calendar reminder to flush out the old and bring in the new. So embrace your period as a time of change and reflection! Oh, and eat chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate.
