For years, it’s been all about the thong. Heck, there’s even a song devoted to it. No other type of underwear can say that. Things are changing though. The thong is slowly losing ground to a new and surprising lingerie challenger: “granny panties.”
The New York Times reported that sales of thongs have dropped 7 percent this past year, while sales of full-coverage underwear have risen 17 percent. But what’s fueling this change?
Changing Perceptions of Beauty
The rising popularity of full-coverage panties is partially caused by a larger trend: increased love and acceptance of all body types. Both as a society and as individuals, we’re beginning to realize that there’s not just one ideal body type.
In some ways, we have retailers to thank for this change in our perception of beauty. Many retailers are slowly moving away from using the stereotypical model: thin, busty, and photoshopped. Instead, they’re featuring models with body types that represent a larger segment of the population. Women and men alike can now see that beauty isn’t confined to a size 2.
Retailers have also increased their marketing of clothing and lingerie in extended sizes. They realize that consumers want to buy products that are affordable, attractive, and comfortable. Stores are now offering a wide range of full coverage panties. They’re selling high-waisted, high-cut panties that bring to mind a more glamorous time, when curvier bodies were in vogue.
Comfort Above All
Another factor that’s responsible for the rise of the full-coverage panty is the change in the shopping habits of women. Women are starting to dress and shop for themselves. They’re buying what they like and what makes them comfortable, instead of what they think a man will find sexy. More women are embracing the idea that it’s okay to be yourself and like what you like. It’s okay to be comfortable.
Many lingerie designers are beginning to realize this too. When they design, they’re starting to think about what a woman would like to wear and what would make her feel good, instead of thinking about what a man will find sexy. After all, he’s not the one who has to wear it.
In the end, it seems that women are flocking to more comfortable panties for a variety of reasons and all of them seem positive. Anything that makes women more happy, confident, and comfortable is something that we can all support.
